The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) required a number of custom video players to be built, each having different dimensions, media capabilities and campaign purposes.

The Broadcast Feature players were developed and launched for a very special event, the 2008 Beijing Olympics. During Olympics they’ve been broadcasting to a large audience through all the CBC’s Broadcast Feature microsites (Beijing Bound, Team Canada, etc.).

The Regional Living player was designed to provide access to a very large database of audio and video assets. Its complexity required breadcrumbs navigation, a custom region-search to exclude duplicates across regions, and even an expanded mode for the playlist area to help the user navigation through the many video assets.

The complete functionality provided with the Regional Living player also included:

  • Interactive multi-level navigation through 4 levels of nested groups and dynamic playlists.
  • Dynamic customization. Using the Maven Internet TV Platform (MITVP), the publishers can change the template style and colors, or turn on/off features.
  • Custom expand-view for the playlist area.
  • Custom support for both 16:9 and 4:3 to accommodate Regional Living content, advertising pre-rolls and other content aspect ratio for video and thumbnails.
  • Video metrics reporting through Web Trends.
  • Pluck integration to allow for site visitors to comment on a video or audio file.
  • Advertising capabilities with clickable pre-rolls and companion banners, and a custom built ad-connectors. The advertising was delivered by DoubleClick DART ad servers.
  • Google Maps & Google Search integration.

The CBC players were running on top of the MITVP, powered by Maven Networks (acquired by Yahoo!), that was providing ways for content management and dynamic customization.
